New Delhi: On February 17, 2025, the Law Ministry announced that President Droupadi Murmu had appointed Gyanesh Kumar as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India. This pivotal move has placed Gyanesh Kumar at the helm of the Election Commission of India (ECI), replacing Rajiv Kumar, who is set to retire on February 18. Additionally, Vivek Joshi was appointed as Election Commissioner in a separate notification. The appointments are set to take effect on February 19.
A Landmark Appointment
Gyanesh Kumar’s appointment is noteworthy for being the first under the new law governing the selection of Election Commission officials. This move marks a significant step in the evolution of the commission’s operations and leadership.
Academic and Professional Journey
Gyanesh Kumar’s illustrious career began with his academic pursuits. A graduate of IIT Kanpur with a B.Tech in Civil Engineering, Kumar’s thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. He later pursued a degree in Business Finance from ICFAI, followed by a specialization in India and Environmental Economics from Harvard University. This rich academic background has laid the foundation for his extensive government service.
A Stellar Career in Public Service
Kumar’s career spans various key administrative roles in the Indian bureaucracy. He has served as the Assistant Collector of Ernakulam, Sub-Collector of Adoor, and Municipal Commissioner of the Corporation of Cochin, to name a few. His leadership and expertise were also recognized when he was appointed as the Managing Director of the Kerala State Development Corporation for SC/ST, where he worked towards promoting welfare initiatives for marginalized communities.
As Secretary to the Government of Kerala, Gyanesh Kumar handled a variety of departments, including Finance and Public Works, further showcasing his capability in managing large-scale administrative tasks.
Service at the National Level
Kumar has also contributed to the central government, serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs. His tenure as Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs added another layer to his versatile career, which has spanned both state and national roles.
As the new Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar inherits a legacy of fair and transparent elections. His varied background in public service and governance uniquely positions him to lead the Election Commission into the future, ensuring the integrity of India’s electoral process.
