Kolkata: Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s son, Abhijit Mukherjee, officially rejoined the Congress in Kolkata on Wednesday, admitting that his decision to join the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2021 was a “mistake.”

Mukherjee, a two-time Congress Lok Sabha MP and former MLA from West Bengal, had contested the 2019 general elections from Jangipur as a Congress candidate but suffered a massive defeat. Following his electoral loss, he remained politically inactive for a while before joining TMC in July 2021. His induction into the ruling party was facilitated by former West Bengal Education Minister and TMC Secretary General Partha Chatterjee, who is now embroiled in the multi-crore cash-for-school-jobs scam.

However, Mukherjee never became a prominent face in TMC’s political activities. The party sidelined him, ultimately denying him a ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Recently, he approached Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, expressing his willingness to return to the party.

Speaking at the Congress headquarters in Kolkata after his rejoining, Mukherjee said, “Coming back to the country’s oldest national party was my spontaneous decision.”
