Kolkata: A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ruled out an alliance between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Congress for the 2026 Assembly elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut urged her to maintain dialogue with the grand old party.
Addressing TMC legislators and ministers on Monday, Banerjee blamed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress for the Opposition’s failure in the Delhi and Haryana Assembly elections. She asserted that the TMC would secure a two-thirds majority in the 294-seat West Bengal Assembly without Congress’s support.
A senior minister present at the meeting quoted Banerjee as saying, “The AAP did not help Congress in the Haryana polls, and Congress did not support AAP in Delhi. Such things are unacceptable. Congress doesn’t exist in Bengal.”
She also warned party members against infighting and alleged that the BJP might attempt to include foreigners’ names in the voter list to manipulate the elections.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Raut acknowledged that the TMC has historically contested elections independently but emphasized Congress’s significance in the INDIA bloc. “Mamata Banerjee should always continue to have a dialogue with Congress,” Raut stated.
In a surprising remark during the meeting, Banerjee distanced herself from familial ties, saying, “I have no family. The party and the people are my family,” according to an MLA present.
