At the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Mumbai, we undertake craft research documentation to preserve and understand India’s traditional crafts. Under the mentorship of Professor Sandeep Kidile, our journey led us to Dhapewada village in Nagpur’s Vidarbha region, where we explored the rich weaving tradition of Patti Kinar sarees. Beyond the craft itself, we connected with the artisans and their experiences, gaining deeper insight into their challenges and aspirations.

Patti Kinar sarees, woven from single-cotton yarn, are a testament to Maharashtra’s skilled craftsmanship. These sarees are distinguished by intricate butis created using the extra-weft technique, allowing weavers to craft detailed patterns and motifs. Each saree measures 6.5 meters in length and features a 3-inch plain border, offering a simple yet elegant aesthetic. This art has been passed down through generations, preserving the heritage of Vidarbha’s weaving community.

However, this tradition is at risk. With the rise of machine-made textiles, demand for these sarees has declined, threatening the livelihoods of artisans. Many cooperative societies that once flourished now struggle to sustain production. The younger generation, facing financial instability and limited opportunities, is drifting away from the craft. Without intervention, this precious heritage may fade into obscurity.

Reviving the Patti Kinar saree requires strategic efforts—training young artisans, integrating contemporary designs, and leveraging digital platforms for wider market reach. Designer collaborations and sustainability-driven initiatives can breathe new life into this craft, making it appealing to a global audience. Strengthening the handloom sector will not only empower weavers financially but also boost local employment and tourism.

Our team is dedicated to this revival, ensuring that Dhapewada’s weaving legacy continues to shine. Through education, innovation, and market expansion, we aim to create a future where tradition and modernity coexist, securing a place for Patti Kinar sarees in the evolving world of fashion. Saving this craft is not just about preserving fabric—it is about honoring history, culture, and the artisans who keep this legacy alive.
