President Murmu Offers Condolences Over Maha Kumbh Stampede in Parliament Address; Highlights Govt’s Achievements

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu, addressing a joint sitting of Parliament ahead of the Budget Session 2025, expressed deep condolences over the tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which claimed at least 30 lives on Wednesday.

“The historic Maha Kumbh is a festival of our cultural traditions and social awakening. Crores of devotees from India and the world have taken a holy dip in Prayagraj. I express my condolences on the accident that occurred on Mauni Amavasya and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” President Murmu said in her address.

The President’s speech set the tone for the Budget Session, which is expected to focus on key legislative and financial measures. She also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024, recalling his contributions to the nation’s economic and social development.

Celebrating 75 Years of the Constitution
President Murmu extended greetings on the occasion of India celebrating 75 years of adopting its Constitution. “Two months ago, we celebrated the 75 years of adopting our Constitution, and a few days ago, we completed our journey of 75 years as a Republic. On behalf of all Indians, I bow down to Babasaheb Ambedkar and all members of the Constitution Committee,” she said.

She highlighted the significance of November 26, celebrated as Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas), and January 26, observed as Republic Day, marking the day the Constitution came into effect in 1950.

Government’s Commitment to Development
President Murmu emphasized the government’s commitment to accelerating development in its third term, stating, “My government is working at thrice the speed of previous administrations.” She reiterated the government’s focus on fulfilling the dreams of the middle class, particularly in providing affordable housing.

The President also underscored the government’s vision for women-led development, announcing an ambitious target to create “3 crore Lakhpati Didis” (women earning ₹1 lakh or more annually). “My government believes in empowering women to lead the country’s development journey,” she said.
