The Supreme Court ruled that election disputes arising during the poll process must be addressed through election petitions.

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India granted custody parole to Tahir Hussain, the AIMIM candidate and one of the accused in the 2020 Delhi riots. Hussain, who is charged with the killing of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer during the riots, has been allowed to campaign for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections between January 29 and February 3. This decision comes as a major relief to Hussain, who had sought parole to actively participate in the electoral process.

However, the Supreme Court has imposed certain conditions for the parole. Hussain is required to bear all the costs associated with his custody parole, including the expenses for Delhi police officials assigned to him, as well as the costs for the jail van and escort services. The court also specified that Hussain would be released from jail upon the deposit of approximately Rs 2 lakh for a 12-hour parole period, in accordance with the jail manual.

The ruling has sparked significant attention, given the serious criminal charges against Hussain and the sensitive nature of the 2020 Delhi riots.
