Chattogram: A court in Bangladesh’s Chattogram has rejected the bail plea of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, who was arrested on November 25, 2024, in connection with a sedition case. The decision was made by Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam on Thursday after hearing arguments from both sides for about 30 minutes.

Chinmoy’s bail plea had been filed by a team of 11 Supreme Court lawyers who traveled from Dhaka. The team, led by advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, spokesperson of the Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, a group that Chinmoy is also affiliated with, sought his release. However, despite their efforts, the court denied the request for bail.

The hearing, held under tight security, came after a tense period in which no lawyer had stepped in to represent Chinmoy due to threats from Islamist groups, who had warned lawyers of public violence if they represented the Hindu monk.

Bhattacharjee, speaking to the Dhaka-based newspaper The Daily Star, stated that they would now appeal the decision in the High Court.
