In a closely fought battle, BJP’s Atul Moreshwar Save emerged victorious over AIMIM’s Imtiaz Jaleel in the Aurangabad East constituency during the Maharashtra assembly elections. The contest remained tense throughout the day as both candidates alternated in the lead, but Save ultimately secured a narrow victory by approximately 2,100 votes. The result marks a significant blow to AIMIM, as Jaleel, a prominent leader in the party, was expected to put up a strong fight.

Although the Election Commission has yet to officially declare the final result, Jaleel’s son, Bilal Jaleel, confirmed his father’s defeat. “The contest was intense, and unfortunately, my father has lost,” he acknowledged, bringing an end to hours of speculation.

The election was not without controversy. Just days before the results, Jaleel alleged that bogus votes had been cast in the Aurangabad East constituency during the polls. He presented video evidence to the press on Thursday and demanded action from the election authorities. Despite these allegations, the BJP’s Atul Save maintained his lead in the final rounds of counting, securing the seat for his party.

This election was also significant for the constituency’s historical and political identity. While the district was officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar earlier this year, the assembly seat continues to be referred to as Aurangabad East. The name change and its implications have added another layer of complexity to the political dynamics in the region.

Polling for Maharashtra’s 288 assembly seats took place on Wednesday, with counting held on Saturday. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has achieved a decisive majority across the state, further consolidating its position. Atul Save’s victory in Aurangabad East is seen as a key win for the BJP, highlighting the party’s growing influence in a region where AIMIM once held considerable sway.
