The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the dates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. In Maharashtra, voters will head to the polls in a single phase on November 20, while Jharkhand will vote in two phases—on November 13 and November 20. The counting of votes for both states is scheduled for November 23.

Maharashtra, which has a 288-member Legislative Assembly, will see a high-stakes battle as political alliances prepare for the contest. The ruling Mahayuti coalition, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction, is expected to face stiff competition from the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, which includes Congress, Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction, and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT).

In Jharkhand, the 81-seat Assembly will witness political parties fighting for control as the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and its allies, including Congress, face challenges from the BJP and its partners.

The ECI has also confirmed that the election results will be declared on November 23, setting the stage for a decisive outcome in both states. These elections are seen as crucial for both regional and national political landscapes, as they come just months before the 2024 general elections.
