In a surprising move, the Maharashtra cabinet announced on Monday that it would waive tolls for all light motor vehicles entering Mumbai from all five entry points starting at midnight. This decision has brought a sigh of relief to commuters, who have long faced the financial burden of toll fees. Raj Thackeray, the chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), welcomed the announcement, stating that the long-standing demand for a toll-free Mumbai has finally been fulfilled.
“After a long fight, Mumbaikars will finally get relief now,” Thackeray said. “I hope this decision is permanent and that the new government does not resume toll collection after the elections.” He has been advocating for a toll-free Mumbai since 2013, emphasizing the rising costs associated with toll collection.
Thackeray expressed gratitude to MNS workers who have tirelessly campaigned against toll fees, stating, “This is a victory for our MNS workers across Maharashtra, who have fought on the ground to stop toll collection. Many of them have faced legal action and some have even been jailed. They fought for the people, and I congratulate them. I also congratulate Thanekars, who have paid Rs 45 each to travel each side for the last 25 years.”
The toll waiver, ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections, is seen as a strategic move by the Mahayuti government to win over voters. The five entry points into Mumbai where tolls will no longer be collected are Mulund-Eastern Expressway, Mulund LBS Road, Dahisar, Airoli, and Vashi.
Minister Dada Bhuse remarked, “It is a big relief for Mumbaikars. Tolls of Rs 45 and Rs 75 were being collected, with the deadline for payment extended to 2026. This decision will benefit approximately 280,000 vehicles.” He noted that the government considered the financial impact of the toll waiver while formulating this plan.
Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar added, “Considering the integrated road development plan, the toll waiver for light vehicles is a welcome decision.”
As the people of Mumbai prepare for this significant change, the MNS and its supporters are optimistic about the implications of this move and hope for a lasting resolution to toll collection in the city.
