Ratan Tata, the veteran industrialist and chairman emeritus of Tata Group, passed away late on Wednesday night at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. Tata, 86, was a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and had been admitted to the hospital for several days before breathing his last at 11:30 pm, according to a senior police official. Known for his transformative leadership, Tata played a pivotal role in expanding the salt-to-software conglomerate, Tata Group.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the passing of the industrial icon, speaking with Noel Tata, Ratan Tata’s half-brother and chairman of Trent and Tata Investment Corporation. In a heartfelt tribute, PM Modi praised Tata’s leadership, noting that his influence extended far beyond the corporate world. “Ratan Tata provided stable leadership to one of India’s most prestigious business houses, but his true legacy lies in his humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to making society better,” said the Prime Minister.
Due to international commitments, PM Modi will be unable to attend the funeral, as he is scheduled to leave for Laos for the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits. However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will represent the government at the funeral in Mumbai, Shah will pay his respects to Ratan Tata’s mortal remains on behalf of the Government of India.
In a statement, Tata’s family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of love and respect following his passing. “We, his brothers, sisters, and family, take solace and comfort in the love and respect from all who admired him. While he is no longer with us in person, his legacy of humility, generosity, and purpose will continue to inspire future generations,” the statement read.
Ratan Tata’s death marks the end of an era for the Tata Group and the Indian business community. His leadership and vision played a key role in the global expansion of the group, and his contributions will leave an indelible mark on the country’s industrial and social landscape.
