Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has initiated a high-level inquiry into the tragic death of a 45-year-old woman who fell into a stormwater drain during heavy rains on Wednesday night. The victim, identified as Vimal Anil Gaikwad, fell into an open drain near Gate No. 8 of MIDC in Andheri East at around 9:20 pm.

The incident came to light after local police and the fire brigade were alerted. Despite immediate rescue efforts, Vimal Gaikwad was declared brought dead at Cooper Hospital. The incident has sparked concerns over public safety and the conditions of open drains during the monsoon season.

In response, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani ordered a high-level investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident. “A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident where a woman died after falling into an open drainage. The report is to be submitted within three days,” the BMC stated in an official release on Thursday.

The probe will be conducted by a three-member committee headed by Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 3) Devidas Kshirsagar, with Mumbai Fire Brigade Chief Ravindra Ambulgekar and Chief Engineer (Vigilance) Avinash Tambewagh as the other members. The committee has been tasked with examining the factors that led to the mishap and will submit its findings within the stipulated time.

This tragic incident occurred amidst heavy downpours that have lashed Mumbai, once again highlighting the perennial issues of waterlogging and the dangers posed by open stormwater drains in the city. As the city grapples with these challenges, the BMC has assured that stringent measures will be taken to prevent such accidents in the future.

Local residents and civic activists have long voiced concerns about the lack of safety precautions around open drains, especially during the monsoon season when the risk of accidents is heightened. This incident has reignited calls for immediate action and stricter safety protocols to protect citizens.

The findings of the high-level committee will be keenly awaited, as they are expected to shed light on any lapses in safety and maintenance, and may lead to actionable recommendations to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
