Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party, has strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks during an election rally alleging that the Congress party wants to seize people’s gold and property and distribute it among Muslims with “more children.”
Reacting sharply, Owaisi accused PM Modi of engaging in dirty politics by targeting Muslims to secure majority votes. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Modi today called Muslims infiltrators and people with many children. Since 2002 till this day, the only Modi guarantee has been to abuse Muslims and get votes.”
Owaisi further stated, “If one is talking about the country’s wealth, one should know that under Modi’s rule the first right to India’s wealth has been of his wealthy friends. 1% of Indians own 40% of the country’s wealth. Common Hindus are made to fear Muslims while their wealth is being used to enrich others.”
The controversy arose from PM Modi’s speech at an election rally on Sunday, where he attacked the Congress party over its promise to conduct a survey for more equitable distribution of the country’s wealth if voted to power. Modi alleged that the Congress would check how much gold and silver people own, particularly targeting Muslim women’s gold and tribal families’ silver, with the intention to redistribute it among “those with more children” and “illegal immigrants.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks drew sharp criticism from the opposition Congress party, which clarified that it did not mention “redistribution” in its manifesto and that party leader Rahul Gandhi’s words were misquoted. The Congress maintained that its proposal was for a comprehensive socio-economic caste census to identify wealth disparities.
The exchange highlights the heated rhetoric and polarizing narratives emerging during the ongoing election campaign season in India.
