BJP’s Speaker Rahul Narwekar Sparks Controversy by Attending ABS Event with Geeta Gawli, Causing Acute Embarrassment to Fadnavis and Party

Speaker Rahul Narwekar’s participation in an event organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS), spearheaded by Don Arun Gawli, has ignited a significant controversy within his own party, the BJP, and among city activists.

Last Monday, Narwekar attended a function organized by the ABS at the Heritage Hotel in Byculla, which was also graced by the presence of Geeta Gawli, daughter of the don, who has faced several criminal cases, including murder. Confirming his attendance, Narwekar, when contacted by FPJ, expressed his support for the ABS and Geeta Gawli in his speech, even going to the extent of assuring Geeta Gawli, a former corporator, that he would help her get elected as the mayor.

Narwekar, who was aspiring for the BJP’s ticket to contest the Lok Sabha poll from the Mumbai South constituency, seems to have lost favor with the party. A source in the BJP told FPJ on Friday that Narwekar, an MLA from Colaba, has jeopardized his chances of bagging the party ticket. Instead, his actions have inadvertently boosted the chances of Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha securing the ticket.

Expressing shock over Narwekar’s actions, a party MLA noted that Narwekar not only attended the function and spoke at it but also posted the video on Facebook. “It beats me how he could have done that. All of us in the party are stunned. Narwekar was a blue-eyed boy of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who got him elected as the Speaker, even though there were more deserving candidates in our party. He has caused acute embarrassment to Fadnavis and all of us,” the MLA added. An ex-MLA of the party said during elections, all parties seek the help of the ‘bhais’ since they control vote banks. “But this is done very discreetly. Narwekar was very tactless,” he added.

Narwekar’s involvement with the ABS and his public support for Geeta Gawli, known for her criminal background, have raised serious concerns within the BJP. Narwekar’s actions have highlighted a growing rift within the party and have put his own political future in jeopardy.
