The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has called upon the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to conduct a thorough examination of the sugar levels in Nestle’s baby food offerings after a report highlighted potential non-compliance with health standards.

A joint report by Swiss organization Public Eye and the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) revealed that Nestle’s baby food brands in India contain higher amounts of added sugar compared to the same products available in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and other developed nations.

In a letter addressed to the food regulator, NCPCR Chief Priyank Kanoongo emphasized the need for FSSAI to review the sugar content in baby food products manufactured and sold by Nestle and other companies, citing concerns about potential health risks for infants and young children.

Acknowledging the vulnerability of this demographic and their specific nutritional requirements, NCPCR urged FSSAI Chief G. Kamala Vardhan Rao to ensure that baby food adheres to stringent standards for nutritional quality and safety.

NCPCR also requested FSSAI to verify whether Nestle’s products are certified by the authority and to provide the Commission with standard guidelines for infant food products. Additionally, it sought information on the list of baby food product companies and products registered with the food regulator.

The Commission has given FSSAI a deadline of seven days to investigate and furnish the required information. Meanwhile, Nestle has responded by stating that it has reduced added sugars by up to 30% over the past five years and maintains a commitment to the nutritional quality of its products.
