Western Railway (WR) has announced a comprehensive strategy to address the chronic congestion along the Andheri-Borivali corridor by extending the harbour line by 8 kilometers from Goregaon to Borivali. The ambitious project, expected to be completed in two phases by 2027-28, aims to alleviate overcrowding and improve commuter experience on one of WR’s busiest routes.
According to reports in the Times Of India, tenders for the Rs 825-crore project are scheduled for release in May, with construction set to commence around June 15. The extension will be executed in two stages, with the initial 2-kilometer stretch connecting Goregaon to Malad targeted for completion by 2026-27. The subsequent phase will extend the line by 5 kilometers from Malad to Borivali, slated for conclusion by 2027-28, as confirmed by a senior WR official.
The harbour line currently links Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Goregaon, with its most recent extension, from Andheri to Goregaon, completed in 2018.
Preliminary groundwork for the project has already commenced, including geotechnical assessments, topographic surveys, and evaluations of existing structures. Land acquisition is underway, with 1,900 square meters of land across 20 locations earmarked for acquisition, primarily from private owners. Acquisition proceedings have commenced for 1,740 square meters of land under private ownership. The project is expected to affect 24 private buildings, with elevated stations planned at key locations due to space constraints, particularly at Malad.
The elevation of Malad station, a first along the route, marks a departure from the ground-level positioning of other stations between Goregaon and Borivali. Additionally, the corridor will feature a ramp on the western side of the existing tracks after veering north from Goregaon. The construction of a flyover at Malad is estimated at Rs 145 crore, with an additional Rs 65 crore allocated for the elevated station.
