Veteran politician Sharad Pawar launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government on Sunday for their alleged failure to take responsibility and provide support to the people of violence-hit Manipur.

While campaigning for his daughter Supriya Sule in Daund, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief questioned PM Modi’s lack of attention towards the crisis in the northeastern state.

“The people of Manipur have faced the worst crisis. They have seen the worst kind of violence, especially against women. The communities in Manipur were divided into two parts. The Centre and the state should have taken action against the perpetrators but the governments failed in their duty,” Pawar said.

He criticized PM Modi for finding time to visit various cities and countries but not even mentioning the situation in Manipur. “We should all stand solidly behind the people of Manipur and also those who face injustice and humiliation,” the former Union minister stated.

Pawar’s comments come amid the ongoing ethnic clashes between the Kuki tribe and the majority Meitei community in Manipur that have claimed over 100 lives since early May.

At a separate rally in Baramati, Pawar took a jibe at Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for “taking pride” in splitting parties like the NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT). He asserted that party workers remained firmly behind him and would “show Fadnavis his place.”

The NCP supremo’s remarks have added to the growing voices demanding urgent intervention from the central government to restore peace and normalcy in the strife-torn northeastern state.
