Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal found himself behind bars on Monday, marking the fourth member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to be imprisoned in Tihar Jail, further intensifying political strife between the ruling BJP and the opposition INDIA bloc ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Kejriwal’s confinement in Tihar Jail will last until April 15, following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21. The ED, which is probing his alleged involvement in a scam, hinted at the possibility of seeking his custody again in the future.
Joining Kejriwal in Tihar Jail are his former deputy Manish Sisodia (Jail No 1), former Health Minister Satyendar Jain (Jail No 7), and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh (Jail No 5). Additionally, Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha, daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, is housed in Jail No 6 of the women’s section, accused of involvement in a bribery scandal related to liquor licenses in Delhi.
Prison Routine and Facilities for Kejriwal
In Tihar Jail, Kejriwal’s daily routine mirrors that of his fellow inmates. His day begins at sunrise, followed by a simple breakfast of tea and bread. Throughout the day, he may attend court hearings or meet with his legal team.
Lunch, consisting of dal, sabzi, and roti or rice, is served early, followed by a lock-up period from noon to 3 pm. Afternoon tea and biscuits are provided at 3:30 pm, with opportunities for lawyer meetings thereafter. Dinner is served at 5:30 pm, and inmates retire to their cells by 7 pm.
Kejriwal is afforded certain amenities in prison, including access to television channels during designated times. Medical staff are available round-the-clock to address any health concerns, particularly important for Kejriwal, who is diabetic. His lawyer has requested a special diet to accommodate his health condition.
Family visits are permitted twice a week, subject to clearance by prison security. Additionally, requests have been made for religious texts and reading material to be provided to Kejriwal during his imprisonment.
