Dilip Ghosh, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from Medinipur, ignited controversy with his recent comment targeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The remark, made during a conversation with reporters in Durgapur on Tuesday (March 26), took aim at Banerjee’s self-proclaimed identity as the “daughter of Goa and Tripura.”

Ghosh, who is also set to contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Elections from the Durgapur seat in West Bengal, derided Banerjee’s claims, questioning her consistency. He pointed out Banerjee’s habit of identifying herself differently in different regions, mocking her by stating, “at least fix who is your father,” in Bengali.

The statement drew swift condemnation from various quarters, with Sushmita Dev, a leader of the Trinamool Congress, highlighting the BJP’s supposed hypocrisy. Dev referenced the BJP’s earlier protests against derogatory comments aimed at Kangana Ranaut, BJP’s nominee from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, contrasting their silence on Ghosh’s remarks.

“Frustrated” BJP Draws Criticism

Sushmita Dev labeled the BJP as “frustrated” and condemned the remarks made against Mamata Banerjee, describing them as contrary to Indian traditions. The Trinamool Congress accused the BJP of disrespecting Banerjee, the only woman Chief Minister in the country, and linked Ghosh’s comments to the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the parent organization of the BJP.

The incident underscores the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal as parties gear up for the upcoming elections, with rhetoric and personal attacks becoming increasingly common in the heated atmosphere of the state’s political landscape.
