As the eagerly anticipated Lok Sabha elections of 2024 draw near, Maharashtra braces itself for a crucial electoral battle, with voting scheduled for April 19 in five key constituencies in East Vidarbha during the first phase. However, amidst the electoral fervor, the absence of finalized candidates from the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition has left activists and officials in a state of uncertainty.

With the Maha Vikas Aghadi yet to endorse candidates for the East Vidarbha constituencies, there looms a shadow of confusion reminiscent of the party’s setbacks in the previous elections of 2014 and 2019. To avoid repeating past embarrassments, the Congress party is considering fielding two prominent leaders from Maharashtra, namely Congress state president Nana Patole and opposition leader Vijay Wadettiwar.

While both Nana Patole and Vijay Wadettiwar are seen as formidable contenders, Nana Patole himself has expressed reluctance towards contesting the election. In a recent statement, Patole emphasized that he should not be confined to the Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha constituency, hinting at his apprehension towards a potential electoral showdown.

The deliberations within the Congress party have intensified, with the steering committee convening in New Delhi to discuss potential candidates for the Maharashtra constituencies. While the names of 13 candidates have been nearly finalized, the spotlight remains on Nana Patole and Vijay Wadettiwar, whose candidature is eagerly awaited.

However, the prospect of fielding Nana Patole faces internal hurdles, particularly in the Chandrapur Lok Sabha constituency, where supporters of Vijay Wadettiwar and Pratibha Dhanorkar vie for prominence. Despite the mounting pressure, Nana Patole remains hesitant about contesting, preferring to focus on broader party objectives within the Mahavikas Aghadi alliance.

Addressing party workers and officials in a meeting at Sakolit, Bhandara, Nana Patole urged for unity and emphasized the importance of adhering to the party’s decisions regarding candidate selection. He reiterated his stance against being confined to a single constituency, signaling a reluctance towards electoral battles.

As activists persist in their calls for Nana Patole’s candidacy, the Congress leader remains non-committal, stating that he will convey his sentiments to party leadership and abide by their directives. However, Patole underscores the party’s collective efforts in securing victories for the Mahavikas Aghadi coalition, hinting at a broader strategy beyond individual candidacies.

With the uncertainty surrounding Nana Patole’s candidature, the Congress party finds itself at a crossroads, navigating internal dynamics while striving to present a united front ahead of the impending electoral showdown in East Vidarbha.
