In a dramatic turn of events, Nayab Singh Saini, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Haryana, emerged victorious in a crucial floor test during a special Assembly session convened on Wednesday. This development unfolded following the sudden resignation of former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and the subsequent dissolution of the BJP-Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) coalition.
Assuming office just a day prior to the floor test, Saini swiftly garnered support from 48 MLAs, demonstrating a solid foundation for his leadership. With this backing, he approached Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, cementing his position as the state’s chief executive.
The political upheaval stemmed from mounting disagreements between the BJP and the JJP, spearheaded by Dushyant Chautala, primarily revolving around the distribution of seats for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This discord culminated in Khattar’s resignation and paved the way for Saini’s ascension to power.
Despite efforts by the JJP leadership to influence the outcome, the floor test saw a significant defiance of party directives. Four JJP MLAs, namely Jogi Ram Sihag, Ishwar Singh, Ramkumar Gautam, and Devendra Babli, chose to break ranks and participate in the assembly session, contrary to the party’s instructions. Additionally, Independent MLA Balraj Kundu joined their ranks, further complicating the political landscape.
In the 90-seat state assembly, the BJP commands a sizable presence with 41 seats, bolstered by support from six independent members and Gopal Kanda of the Haryana Lokhit Party. On the opposing front, the JJP wields influence over 10 seats, while the Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal hold 30 and one seat, respectively.
Nayab Singh Saini, a seasoned leader representing the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and serving as Haryana’s BJP chief, was sworn in as Chief Minister during a solemn ceremony at the Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh. Alongside him, five MLAs—four from the BJP and one independent—were inducted as ministers, marking the beginning of a new era in Haryana’s political landscape.
