The Karnataka government took decisive action on Friday by banning the use of drinking water for various non-essential purposes, including car washing, gardening, construction, and maintenance, in response to a worsening water crisis in Bengaluru.
The Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KWSSB) announced stringent measures, including a fine of ₹5,000 for violations of the ban, underscoring the severity of the situation.
The move follows the Bengaluru city administration’s decision on Thursday to implement price caps for water tankers based on the quantity of water and delivery distance, as the city grapples with an acute water shortage.
Even before the onset of summer, Bengaluru has been facing a dire water scarcity exacerbated by over 3,000 dried-up borewells across the city due to inadequate rainfall during the monsoon season.
In response, apartment complexes and gated communities in the tech hub have begun imposing regulations on water usage, with residents reporting notices from their societies about dwindling water supplies.
The Siddaramaiah-led government has been actively seeking drought relief from the Centre and holding meetings to address the crisis. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing water-related projects and irrigation initiatives.
However, the issue has also sparked political tensions, with the ruling Congress and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) engaging in a war of words. Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya warned of protests in front of the Vidhana Soudha if the authorities fail to urgently resolve the drinking water crisis in Bengaluru.
As the water crisis intensifies, the Karnataka government faces mounting pressure to implement effective measures to alleviate the plight of residents and ensure sustainable water management in the long term.
