External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar issued a cautionary note regarding China’s strategic maneuvers, describing it as a “mind game” focused solely on bilateral dynamics. He emphasized that India should not compromise its rights to leverage “other factors in the world” to secure more favorable terms.

Participating in the Raisina Dialogue 2024, Jaishankar discussed the prospects of finding a balance in the relationship between India and China. He highlighted China’s earlier and more aggressive economic expansion compared to India’s more recent and evolving growth trajectory.

Jaishankar acknowledged the natural progression wherein economies eventually flatten out, indicating that India’s growth trajectory is on an upward trend while China’s expansion might stabilize in the future. He referenced projections by Goldman Sachs suggesting that by 2075, both India and China could boast $50 trillion economies, indicating a convergence in their economic statuses.

However, Jaishankar pointed out that recent years have seen a departure from the mutual understanding on the border issue established in the late 1980s, leading to tensions and subsequent pushback from India. He noted instances where one party seeks to assert an advantage, while the other resists, highlighting the need to address these challenges in maintaining equilibrium.

In navigating the complexities of the India-China relationship, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of leveraging external factors to achieve favorable terms. He underscored the need for India to assert its rights and utilize global dynamics to shape bilateral interactions in its favor.
