The harrowing ordeal of Syed Mazahir Ali, an Indian student viciously assaulted by four unidentified assailants in Chicago, United States, has sparked international concern. His wife, Ruqiya Fatima, has urgently reached out to the Indian government, pleading for medical assistance and legal support following the shocking incident that unfolded on February 4.
In a heartfelt letter addressed to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday, Ruqiya Fatima recounted the distressing turn of events. She detailed receiving a distressing call from her husband’s friend, informing her of Ali’s brutal attack and robbery on Campbell Ave in Chicago, near their apartment. Ali, who was pursuing a Masters in Information and Technology at Indiana Wesley University, was subsequently rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
Expressing profound concern for her husband’s well-being, Ruqiya Fatima emphasized Ali’s current state of shock and mental instability, rendering him unable to communicate. She implored the Indian government to intervene urgently, urging for the provision of optimal medical care for Ali and facilitating her travel to the United States with their three minor children to be by his side during this trying time.
Prior to Ruqiya Fatima’s plea, a distressing video depicting the aftermath of the brutal attack circulated widely on social media. In the footage, Ali is seen bleeding profusely, visibly distressed and pleading for assistance. The shocking incident has elicited widespread condemnation and calls for swift action to ensure justice and support for the victim and his family.
As the Indian government responds to Ruqiya Fatima’s impassioned appeal, the incident underscores the pressing need for enhanced safety measures and support mechanisms for international students, highlighting the vulnerability of individuals studying abroad. The pursuit of education should not entail such grave risks, and concerted efforts are imperative to safeguard the well-being of students pursuing their academic aspirations overseas.
