The Rise of Indian Superheroes: HanuMan and the Emergence of a Cinematic Universe

India’s cinematic landscape is witnessing a new era with the phenomenal success of the Telugu superhero film, HanuMan, directed by Prasanth Varma. Breaking box office records, the film is poised to cross the ₹100 crore mark, marking a significant milestone in the Indian superhero genre.

While HanuMan has captured the audience’s imagination, it’s worth noting that India has a history of superhero films, with Bollywood’s iconic Mr India being a trailblazer. Directed by Shekhar Kapur, Mr India, starring Sridevi and Anil Kapoor, was a groundbreaking sci-fi film that left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. However, despite constant rumors of a sequel, it has never materialized.

Fast forward to 2003, Rakesh Roshan ventured into the sci-fi genre with Koi…Mil Gaya, featuring Hrithik Roshan and an extraterrestrial being named Jadoo. The success of Koi…Mil Gaya paved the way for Krrish (2006) and its 2013 sequel, but the concept of a cinematic universe did not materialize.

In 2021, the Malayalam superhero film Minnal Murali, directed by Basil Joseph and starring Tovino Thomas, gained international acclaim by entering Netflix’s Global Top 10 list. The success of Minnal Murali set a new benchmark in Indian cinema, proving that the superhero genre resonates with audiences across languages and borders.

The trend continued in 2023 with the Tamil superhero film Maaveeran, directed by Madonne Ashwin and starring Sivakarthikeyan, grossing nearly ₹100 crore at the box office. Today, the Telugu superhero film HanuMan is making waves, signaling the emergence of a new era in Indian cinema where superhero universes are taking shape.

Rana Daggubati, a Telugu star with a passion for superheroes, has contributed to this evolution by unveiling numerous superhero projects at Comic-Con in San Diego in 2023. His company, Spirit Media, joined forces with Minnal Murali producer Sophia Paul to present superhero Murali in a comic book avatar, showcasing the potential for transmedia storytelling.

Director Basil Joseph, the creative force behind Minnal Murali, emphasizes that while there is room for superhero universes in Indian cinema, originality is crucial. In a genre saturated by Western franchises, Indian superheroes must offer authentic storytelling that resonates with the audience.

As technology advances and film budgets increase, the quality of Indian cinema has seen remarkable improvement. The success of the underdog-turned-superhero narrative, as seen in films like HanuMan, suggests that this genre holds enduring appeal and is far from experiencing audience fatigue.

The cinematic experience, fueled by visionary storytelling and cutting-edge visuals, remains paramount in captivating audiences. With the success of recent superhero films, Indian cinema is not just celebrating individual blockbusters but is on the brink of establishing interconnected superhero universes, creating a new and exciting chapter in the nation’s film industry.
