In the midst of a political controversy surrounding the reported refusal of some spiritual leaders to attend the consecration ceremony at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) working president Alok Kumar clarified that two out of the four Shankaracharyas have openly welcomed the event. However, none of them will be present at the ceremony, choosing to visit the temple at their convenience.
The four Shankaracharyas, who lead Hindu sects following the teachings of Adi Shankara, head main mutts in Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Karnataka. Alok Kumar’s statement comes after Opposition parties criticized the BJP over reports of spiritual leaders declining invitations due to perceived incomplete construction of the temple.
Despite the controversy, the pontiff of the Karnataka mutt urged people to disregard false propaganda and debunked reports suggesting displeasure from Sringeri Mutt regarding the consecration event.
VHP’s working chief highlighted that the Shankaracharya of Odisha’s Govardhan Peeth expressed happiness over the temple’s construction, while mentioning that only Jyotirpeeth Shankaracharya made certain remarks.
Earlier, the head of Odisha’s mutt, Nischalananda Saraswati, had indicated he would skip the ceremony. Additionally, Uttarakhand’s Jyotir Mutt head, Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, stated in a video message that the ceremony goes against sacred scriptures, leading to the decision of four prominent Shankaracharyas not attending the event.
