Vijay Sethupathi, a prominent name in Tamil cinema who has been gradually carving a niche for himself in Hindi cinema as well, recently shared insights during an event hosted by Bollywood Hungama. The versatile actor, recognized for his antagonist role in Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, is set to join forces with Katrina Kaif in the upcoming movie Merry Christmas.

However, amidst the excitement surrounding his current projects, Vijay Sethupathi revisited a past disappointment, shedding light on an episode that had left a profound impact on him and the team associated with the acclaimed Tamil film Super Deluxe.

In 2019, Vijay received widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Shilpa, a transperson, in Super Deluxe. The film, directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, boasted a stellar cast including Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Ramya Krishnan, Mysskin, Mirnalini Ravi, among others. Vijay’s segment, titled “Shilpa’s Story,” depicted a parent’s emotional journey to reconnect with their son and family following a gender-affirming surgery.

Fans and critics alike anticipated that Super Deluxe would represent India at the Oscars. However, much to their dismay, Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy was chosen as India’s official entry instead.

Expressing his feelings at the event, Vijay Sethupathi shared, “It was heartbreaking for me and the team of Super Deluxe. I was shattered, but it’s politics. We know that something happened. It’s not because I was in that film. Even if I were not in that film, I would’ve wanted that film to go there. Something happened in between and I don’t want to talk about that. It’s unnecessary.”

Despite the Oscar snub, Super Deluxe garnered accolades, and Vijay’s performance earned him the National Award for Best Supporting Actor. The poignant narrative of Shilpa’s Story, combined with the remarkable performances by Vijay Sethupathi and Ashwanth Ashokkumar, who portrayed the son Rasukutty, resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.

The film’s impact on societal perceptions and Vijay’s portrayal of Shilpa transcended mere recognition, becoming a testament to his dedication and versatility as an actor.
