In a significant series of decisions, the Maharashtra state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has initiated a range of measures aimed at addressing pressing issues within the state. These include the issuance of Kunbi caste certificates to Marathas, declaring drought in 40 talukas, revising criteria for relief and rehabilitation during natural calamities, and expediting action on pending chit fund cases.
The cabinet’s move to issue Kunbi caste certificates to Marathas stems from the acceptance of the first report by the Justice Shinde committee, a pivotal step in addressing historical and social concerns within the state.
Furthermore, the declaration of drought in 40 talukas was prompted by the adverse crop water situation, primarily due to scanty rainfall this year, which has hindered Rabi sowing. The government plans to request urgent assistance from the Centre in response to this situation.
The Relief and Rehabilitation Department, along with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is actively working to determine appropriate relief measures for the affected talukas, adhering to the Drought Management Code of 2016.
In addition to drought-related decisions, the cabinet has also expanded the criteria for assistance to victims of natural disasters, increasing the landholding limit from two hectares to three hectares, aligning with the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) norms. This change ensures that more individuals affected by natural calamities will be eligible for assistance, regardless of their landholding status.
Furthermore, the cabinet’s focus on legislative amendments aims to expedite action in chit fund cases currently pending in courts, streamlining the resolution process for such financial disputes.
The cabinet’s agenda extends to education as well, with the approval of an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) for SC students in Chembur, addressing the limited availability of ITIs for SC communities in the Mumbai region.
These decisive actions highlight the government’s commitment to addressing diverse challenges faced by the people of Maharashtra, from social concerns to agricultural crises and education access.
