A devastating fire that broke out in a nightclub in Murcia, southeastern Spain, on Sunday morning has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, according to local authorities. Concerns are mounting that the death toll could increase as rescue teams continue their search amid the wreckage.
The blaze engulfed the “Teatre” nightclub, also known as “Fonda Milagros,” a two-story establishment, in the early hours of the morning. Emergency services, providing updates on social media, have stated that firefighters are still actively working at the scene and have not ruled out the possibility of finding more victims.
Jose Ballesta, the mayor of Murcia, described the incident as “extremely serious,” noting that the fire started around 6:00 am local time (0400 GMT). He highlighted the ongoing challenge of extracting bodies from the debris, citing the risk of structural collapse.
Firefighters, dispatched to the scene at 7:00 am, successfully managed to extinguish the fire by 8:00 am. Images released by emergency services show fire trucks dousing the nightclub’s charred exterior with water, while thick plumes of smoke billow from the building’s rooftop.
Authorities confirmed that four individuals sustained injuries in the incident, all due to smoke inhalation. Among them were two women aged 22 and 25, along with two men in their forties.
