Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted a stern review of the state’s law and order situation during a lengthy meeting held on Monday evening. In the meeting, which extended for over three hours, the Chief Minister took officials to task, particularly focusing on the recent incident in Ambedkar Nagar where a young girl tragically lost her life after being entangled in her dupatta while two men harassed her.
Yogi Adityanath left no room for leniency as he queried police authorities and commissionerate officials regarding their actions. Commencing at 7 pm, the meeting was marked by intense scrutiny of lapses in law enforcement.
One of the central points of discussion was the Ambedkar Nagar incident, with Yogi Adityanath directing his questions towards SP Ajit Sinha. Expressing dissatisfaction with the response, the Chief Minister expressed his concerns, suggesting that if the government hadn’t intervened, it might have seemed as though authorities were celebrating the criminals’ actions. He rhetorically asked, “Were you performing their ‘aarti’?”
The Ambedkar Nagar incident gained widespread attention when a group of men forcibly pulled the girl’s dupatta, causing her to lose balance on her bicycle and leading to a fatal accident when she was subsequently run over by a motorcycle. The alleged molesters, identified as Shahbaz and Faisal, were apprehended by the UP police after being shot in the legs.
Yogi Adityanath emphasized the necessity for swift police action in such incidents and cautioned officials against repeating such mistakes.
Earlier this month, Yogi Adityanath had warned that those who commit crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh would face severe consequences, likening it to facing “Yamraj” (the God of death). These remarks were made in the wake of the Ambedkar Nagar incident, where the perpetrators were taken into police custody. The Chief Minister reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the law would not be misused to disrupt the state’s peace and order.
