BJP group leader Prabhakar Shinde alleges Mayor & MC of flouting rules to clear proposals

@the_news_21

Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) group leader in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday accused Mayor Kishori Pednekar and BMC Municipal Commissioner I S Chahal of misusing their special rights in tabling proposals before the Standing Committee. Hence, the BJP has decided to move the court of law in this regard.

He further accused the ruling Shiv Sena of flouting all the rules in the Municipal Corporation and getting several proposals cleared on the basis of the majority it has in the Standing Committee.

For quite some time now, several proposals before the Standing Committee are tabled under sections of 69(C) and 72(3) of the Municipal Act.

The Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner can spend funds on special issues as per Municipal Act section 69(C) and 73(3). However, these provisions are being abused and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly condemns such blatant flouting of rules.

As per the provisions of the law, these proposals should be brought before the Standing Committee within 15 days. However, flouting all norms the proposals are tabled before the Standing Committee and get passed without any proper discussion on it.

These issues have been raised by the BJP in the civic House several times for which at times the administration has expressed regret. However, there is no sign of stopping the looting of taxpayer’s money in Mumbai.

Three such proposals were brought before the Standing Committee on February 11 (Friday).

The first proposal was worth Rs 44 crore and pertained to Dahisar Jumbo Covid Centre. The Standing Committee was functional even then and still, no details of the said proposal were provided to the Standing Committee members.

The second proposal was regarding recruitment and deployment of security guards. A whopping sum of Rs 1.40 crore was spent on engaging security guards. However, the proposal did not have any information as to how many security guards were hired, where they were deployed and what was their attendance.

The third proposal was the most intriguing like the fable of ‘Pied Piper of Hamlin’. A sum of Rs 1 crore was spent to get rid of rats in Mumbai city. Again, no break-up of the said amount was made available. No one knows how many rats were killed, where and when they were killed and how their bodies were disposed of.
