New Delhi: In the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, the Union Home Ministry has directed all states and Union territories to conduct extensive mock security drills on Wednesday, May 7, as part of a nationwide civil defence preparedness exercise.

According to a detailed communication issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the massive exercise will be conducted at 259 locations across the country, with a special focus on 244 Civil Defence Districts, including major metros like Mumbai and Delhi.

The drills aim to test the country’s readiness in the event of hostile attacks and will simulate emergency responses involving air-raid sirens, civil defence training for civilians, bunker and trench cleaning, and crash-blackout measures. Other strategic measures include camouflaging of vital installations, evacuation rehearsals, and operationalisation of communication systems like hotlines and radio links with the Indian Air Force (IAF).

“In the current geo-political scenario, new and complex threats/challenges have emerged, hence, it would be prudent that optimum civil defence preparedness in the states/UTs is maintained at all times,” stated a letter from the Directorate General Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards, as reported.

In Maharashtra, the drill will be held at 16 key locations, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Raigarh, and Aurangabad, with full participation from state and local authorities.

The MHA’s directive emphasized the involvement of a broad spectrum of participants, including district administrations, civil defence wardens, volunteers, home guards (both active and reserve), National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), and students from schools and colleges.

The move comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds a series of high-level meetings with defence and security officials following the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people lost their lives. In response to the escalating threat, India has already announced a raft of diplomatic sanctions against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and a ban on trade between the two nations.
