151 Maharashtra Tourists Stranded in Uttarkashi; 31 Still Missing Amid Landslides and Floods

Uttarkashi: Heavy landslides and flash floods have left at least 151 tourists from Maharashtra stranded in the remote Dharali region of Uttarkashi district. While 120 tourists have been located and are safe at an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) camp, 31 remain untraceable, including 12 from Mumbai’s suburban areas.

The missing tourists hail from Thane (5), Solapur (4), Ahilyanagar (1), Nashik (4), Malegaon (3), Charkop-Kandivali (6), Mumbai suburbs (6) and Titwala (2), according to PTI reports. Search and rescue operations are in full swing, but poor weather, damaged roads, and disrupted mobile networks have slowed progress.

Maharashtra Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar has spoken with his Uttarakhand counterpart Anand Bardhan, urging intensified rescue and evacuation efforts. Uttarakhand officials say thick cloud cover and damaged mobile infrastructure are major obstacles, with many missing tourists possibly facing mobile battery depletion, further hampering contact.

In a significant breakthrough, satellite phones have been activated in the affected region to restore communication. Rescue teams are also working with the Department of Telecommunications to trace the last known locations of the missing individuals. If weather permits, airlift operations will be launched.

Maharashtra Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan has reached Dehradun to personally oversee the relief mission. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra state disaster control room in Mumbai is coordinating with Uttarakhand authorities, the National Emergency Response Centre, and district officials in Uttarkashi to trace the missing and reassure anxious families.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is closely monitoring the crisis and has directed preparations for special flights or trains to bring back the stranded tourists once travel routes are safe.
