Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a proposed financial support programme aimed at helping women across the state become more financially independent, with the government planning to provide interest-free credit of up to ₹1 lakh to 1 crore women.
The proposed Uttar Pradesh Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana is expected to provide the financial assistance in three stages. Rather than offering the entire amount at once, eligible women would receive successive credit tranches based on the repayment of the earlier amount.
Under the proposed structure, the first tranche would be ₹20,000. Women who repay the initial amount on time would then qualify for a second tranche of ₹30,000. A final ₹50,000 tranche could follow after repayment of the second credit.
Together, the three stages would take the total available credit for an eligible beneficiary to ₹1 lakh.
The proposed scheme comes at a politically significant time in Uttar Pradesh, with the state heading towards Assembly elections. Financial assistance and economic opportunities for women have emerged as an important area of political focus, with parties and governments increasingly highlighting schemes aimed at improving women’s access to income and credit.
There had previously been speculation that the Uttar Pradesh government could announce direct financial assistance of ₹50,000 for women. However, no official announcement confirming such a cash benefit had been made at that stage.
The proposed credit model represents a different approach, as the assistance is structured as interest-free credit rather than a direct cash grant. The repayment-linked system would also allow beneficiaries to access larger amounts progressively.
The initiative is expected to focus on encouraging women to undertake small businesses and income-generating activities by providing access to capital without an interest burden.
Further details regarding eligibility, application procedures, the categories of businesses covered and the implementation timeline are expected to clarify how the proposed scheme will operate.
With a potential reach of 1 crore women and cumulative credit of up to ₹1 lakh per beneficiary, the proposed programme could become a significant component of the Uttar Pradesh government’s women-focused economic initiatives ahead of the Assembly elections.
