In a dramatic turn of events, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has strongly criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for obstructing his visit to the Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) in Lucknow. This incident occurred on the birth anniversary of the revered freedom fighter and socialist leader, Jayaprakash Narayan. Yadav accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of employing tactics reminiscent of colonial regimes to suppress political opposition.

Ahead of Yadav’s scheduled visit, the JPNIC was sealed off and barricaded, with a heavy police presence deployed around the area. Tin shades were placed over the main entrance, further complicating access. Additionally, law enforcement was stationed at Vikramaditya Marg, close to Yadav’s residence in Lucknow, signaling heightened security measures.

This isn’t the first time Yadav has faced such restrictions. Last year, he was also denied permission to pay tribute at the same site, prompting him to scale the gate to garland the statue of the Emergency-era leader, an act of defiance against the government’s measures.

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) issued a letter on October 10, stating that JPNIC is currently an active construction site, littered with hazardous materials. The LDA claimed that due to recent rains, there was a risk of insect infestation at the site. In the letter, they also noted that Yadav, who possesses Z-plus category security, could face safety risks if he proceeded with the visit. “JPNIC is a construction site where construction material is spread haphazardly, and there is a possibility of many insects due to rain,” the LDA said, further justifying their decision.

The decision to block Yadav’s access to JPNIC has sparked widespread outrage among his supporters, who view it as an infringement on democratic rights. As political tensions continue to escalate in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav’s criticism underscores the growing friction between opposition parties and the ruling government.

This incident not only highlights the contentious political landscape in Uttar Pradesh but also raises questions about the government’s commitment to preserving the legacy of leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan.
