Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president and MP Manickam Tagore has responded to the growing political pitch for actor-turned-politician Vijay to be projected as a future Prime Minister, saying the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader should instead focus on becoming an effective Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Addressing the ‘Vijay for PM’ pitch, Tagore said comments suggesting a larger national role for Vijay should not be treated as the official position of the party.
“Treasurer Venkataraman has clearly stated that such remarks are the individual opinions of those who made them and do not represent the party’s position. As far as we are concerned, the matter ends there,” Tagore said.
The Congress leader acknowledged that Vijay has attracted considerable public support since entering electoral politics. However, he said the TVK chief should concentrate on delivering good governance in Tamil Nadu before looking at a national role.
“Vijay has received the support of a large number of people. He should strive to become an excellent Chief Minister by ensuring a corruption-free government without commissions,” Tagore said.
Tagore also made it clear that the Congress would like to see Vijay succeed in his bid to lead the state.
“The Congress party stands with him and wants him to become a good Chief Minister,” he said.
What Is The ‘Vijay For PM’ Pitch?
Vijay, one of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent film personalities, launched the TVK as a political party and has emerged as an important figure ahead of the state’s electoral battle.
The ‘Vijay for PM’ pitch reflects attempts by some supporters to project him beyond Tamil Nadu. Tagore’s remarks, however, indicate that the Congress leadership in the state is currently focusing on Vijay’s potential role as Chief Minister rather than endorsing a Prime Ministerial projection.
His comments also underline the distinction between individual statements made by political functionaries and the official position of a party.
For now, the Tamil Nadu Congress chief has extended support to Vijay’s aspirations to lead the state, while urging him to prioritise corruption-free governance and effective administration.
