Gadchiroli: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced a significant milestone in the state’s fight against Maoism, declaring that the process of eliminating insurgency from Gadchiroli district has officially begun.

Speaking at an official event, CM Fadnavis highlighted the decades-long challenge of Naxalism in Gadchiroli and surrounding districts: “Today is an important day for Gadchiroli district. The process of eliminating Maoism from Gadchiroli began today. Gadchiroli has been battling Maoism for over 40 years. Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Gondia were also initially affected. Neighboring states like Chhattisgarh and Telangana were plagued by Naxalism as well.”

He emphasized the impact of decades of insurgency on development and youth: “Development was devoid of progress. Young people were misled by the system. The surrender of Sonu alias Bhupati is significant because 40 years ago, a new group, the Aheri Sironcha, was started in Gadchiroli. Bhupati was the one who initiated it, providing intellectual support and logistics.”

The CM lauded security forces and local administration for their persistent efforts and called Bhupati’s surrender a turning point in restoring peace and paving the way for socio-economic development in the district.
