61 Of 80 TMC MLAs Skip Mamata Banerjee’s Key Meeting Amid CID Probe

Low Turnout Forces TMC To Defer Important Meeting

The Trinamool Congress was forced to postpone a scheduled legislative party meeting at party chief Mamata Banerjee’s Kolkata residence after only a small fraction of its MLAs attended the gathering. The meeting was expected to focus on the ongoing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry into alleged irregularities surrounding signatures used in a letter related to the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Party leaders later confirmed that discussions would be rescheduled at a later date.

Political Tensions Dominate Party Agenda

The meeting came against the backdrop of heightened political tension following recent incidents involving senior TMC leaders. Party leaders indicated that many legislators were engaged in protest activities across the state and were therefore unable to attend the gathering.

The party has announced statewide demonstrations in response to recent attacks on senior leaders, including national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and MP Kalyan Banerjee. Additional protest programmes are also planned in Kolkata in the coming days.

CID Investigation Remains A Key Concern

The postponed meeting was expected to address developments in the CID probe linked to alleged forged signatures on documents submitted to the Assembly Secretariat regarding the nomination of veteran leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition.

Investigators have already questioned several party legislators as part of the inquiry. The controversy emerged after authorities reportedly found discrepancies while verifying signatures submitted with nomination-related documents.

The issue has gained further significance as Abhishek Banerjee is expected to appear before investigators in connection with the case.

Questions Raised Over Absentee Legislators

The absence of a large number of legislators has triggered speculation within political circles. Some party insiders reportedly expressed concern over the low attendance, particularly as the meeting was called to discuss sensitive legal and political developments affecting the party.

Apart from the forgery investigation, discussions were also expected on the participation of certain TMC legislators in official meetings organised by the newly formed BJP-led state administration.

Arrests And Political Blame Game Continue

Meanwhile, political tensions remain high across West Bengal following a series of protests and clashes involving workers from rival parties. Police have made arrests in connection with recent demonstrations, while both the TMC and BJP continue to accuse each other of escalating political confrontation.

The latest developments add to the uncertainty surrounding the state’s political landscape as investigations continue and opposition parties intensify their attacks on each other ahead of future political battles.

Leadership Focused On Regrouping

Despite the disruption, the TMC leadership is expected to convene another legislative meeting soon to address both organisational matters and the ongoing investigation. Party leaders are also focusing on mobilising workers across districts as they prepare for a fresh round of political campaigns and protest programmes across the state.
