Three Arrested for Alleged Gang-Rape of Student Inside Kolkata Law College, Prime Accused Linked to TMC Youth Wing

Kolkata: In a deeply disturbing incident, police have arrested three people for allegedly gang-raping a woman inside a law college campus in South Kolkata. The victim, a student at the college, lodged a complaint stating the horrific attack took place on June 25, within the guard room of the campus, between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm.

According to police, Monojit Mishra, a former student and once president of the college’s TMC youth wing, is the prime accused. Mishra, currently working as a criminal lawyer at Alipore court, is alleged to have overpowered and raped the woman, while two accomplices kept watch and assisted him. Investigators have seized the mobile phones of all three and sealed the guard room where the assault reportedly occurred.

Senior police officials and forensic teams have visited the crime scene to collect crucial evidence. The accused will be produced in court on Friday, police confirmed.

The brutal assault has triggered political uproar. Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress for failing to protect women, recalling past crimes on educational campuses.

“Anything can happen in this state. There is no safety of women. The chief minister would now say it is a small incident and offer money to the victim. She must resign,” Adhikari said.

Responding to the criticism, TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar condemned the politicisation of the crime:

“It is unfortunate that the opposition is attacking over a social menace. We should all fight this menace together,” he said.
