In a historic move, the Tata Group has successfully concluded the acquisition of Wistron’s Indian operations for a staggering $125 million (approximately ₹1,040 Crore). This strategic acquisition positions Tata as a key player in the production and assembly of Apple iPhones in India, serving both the domestic and global markets. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar made this groundbreaking announcement on the social media platform X.

In his announcement, Chandrasekhar expressed his excitement, saying, “Within just two and a half years, Tata Group will now start making iPhones from India for domestic and global markets. Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron’s operations.”

Chandrasekhar also shared a press release from Wistron, which revealed that Wistron’s board had convened a meeting on the same day and authorized its subsidiaries, SMS InfoComm (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Wistron Hong Kong Limited, to enter into a share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) for the complete transfer of Wistron’s indirect ownership in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited.

The press release further stated, “Upon confirmation and signature of the relevant agreements by both parties, the deal will proceed to obtain the necessary approvals. Following the completion of the transaction, Wistron will make the required announcements and filings in accordance with applicable regulations.”

This acquisition marks a historic milestone as Tata Group becomes the first Indian company to undertake the production of iPhones within the country, reinforcing India’s growing importance in the global electronics manufacturing landscape.

Union Minister Chandrasekhar also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has played a pivotal role in establishing India as a trusted and major hub for smartphone manufacturing and exports.

“The Government of India, represented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), stands fully in support of the growth of Global Indian Electronics companies that will, in turn, support global Electronic brands looking to make India their trusted manufacturing and talent partner. This development aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a global electronics power,” Chandrasekhar added.

This significant move not only strengthens the Make in India initiative but also showcases India’s potential to be a global electronics manufacturing and export hub, further boosting the country’s role in the global technology ecosystem.
