State prefers non-physical examination mode for final year exams to be held in October

State to consider non-physical digital options like online, open book or assignment based

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will conduct final year under-graduate exam in the non-physical, digital mode in the first week of October, state higher and technical education minister Uday Samant announced. For the first time, the state would be conducting final year exams either online, open book or assignment based. Samant stated that a decision on the mode of exams would be announced on September 2 after universities surveyed its feasibility among students by factoring in constraints like network connectivity and access to devices. He added that the results will be announced by November 10.

Secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Rajnish Jain had earlier suggested that those students with no access to internet or android devices could get their answer sheets written, scanned and uploaded by computer centers nearby. Samant said the state was also looking at options like sending question papers or links of question papers to homes of students and collecting answer sheets from them after some days. The state has decided against physical examinations in order to ensure that the 7,92,385 students won’t need to step out of their homes to appear for exams due to health concerns.

The exam structure would be kept simple and marks would be reduced to ensure less burden for students, assured Samant. He added that students have been granted the entire month of September to study. The Maharashtra government is now forced to take examinations for final year students following an order from the Supreme Court (SC). Maharashtra would also approach the UGC to seek extension of exam results after deliberations with the state by invoking the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

While most of the 13 non-agricultural state universities have agreed to conduct exams by October 31, a few like the Amravati University and the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) have sought extension till November 10 to conduct exams due to regional and Covid constraints. The UGC had earlier set a deadline of September 30 for conducting exams.

Among the 950 universities in India, about 818 universities are already geared up for conducting exams. These included about 209 universities, which had already conducted exams prior to Covid pandemic, while another 400 have formulated plans to conduct exams digitally, according to Jain.
