The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed government authorities to closely monitor the health of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose indefinite hunger strike has entered its 19th day. The court stressed that every possible step should be taken to protect his life while ensuring regular medical supervision.
The direction came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that raised concerns over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health and sought urgent intervention by the authorities.
Court Directs Government to Ensure Medical Care
During the proceedings, the High Court observed that the government must provide all necessary medical assistance if Wangchuk’s condition requires immediate intervention.
“We note that the life of any citizen is precious… and all efforts ought to be made by government authorities to save the same,” the court observed.
The court instructed government doctors to carry out regular medical examinations and submit assessments. It further said that if medical experts find any urgent need for treatment, appropriate action should be taken without delay.
Centre Says Health Is Being Monitored
Representing the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that Wangchuk’s health was already under observation.
According to the Centre, government doctors have examined him whenever he permitted medical checks, while private doctors have also been monitoring his condition.
The Solicitor General agreed with the court’s observation, stating that the life of every citizen is important.
PIL Raised Concerns Over Health
The petition, filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini, expressed concern that Wangchuk’s prolonged fast could pose a serious risk to his life if immediate medical attention was not ensured.
The plea sought directions to the Centre and the Delhi government to provide timely medical treatment and take all necessary measures to safeguard the activist’s health.
