In a swift and high-level intervention, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde personally supervised the evacuation of nearly 160 residents of the state who were stranded in Dubai due to escalating tensions in West Asia. The group included 84 students and three faculty members caught in sudden airspace shutdowns triggered by the ongoing regional conflict.
Late Tuesday night, two chartered aircraft landed safely at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, bringing immense relief to anxious families waiting in Mumbai.
Students’ Educational Trip Turns Into Crisis
The stranded passengers were part of an academic visit from Indira University when the regional security situation worsened abruptly. Flight cancellations and airport closures left them uncertain about their return. What was meant to be a short seven-day trip quickly turned into a tense ordeal.
One returning student said they were deeply worried as commercial flights were suspended. According to passengers, Deputy CM Shinde personally contacted some of them over the phone, assuring them that the Maharashtra government would ensure their safe return.
Direct Intervention From Shinde’s Office
Officials confirmed that once the matter came to light, the Deputy CM’s office began coordinating with aviation authorities and central agencies. Special chartered Embraer aircraft operated by Star Air were arranged under emergency conditions to airlift the stranded residents.
University officials stated that while they had been communicating with authorities, progress accelerated after direct involvement from Shinde’s office. The quick coordination reportedly helped cut through procedural delays.
Support From Centre Acknowledged
In a public message shared online, Shinde credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their cooperation in facilitating the operation. He said the safe evacuation brought significant emotional relief to families who had been under stress since flights were grounded.
Warm Welcome in Mumbai
Upon arrival in Mumbai, the rescued passengers were received by party leaders and officials. Arrangements were made to help them travel onward to their hometowns across Maharashtra.
The operation comes as air travel remains severely disrupted due to rising hostilities in West Asia. The Civil Aviation Ministry continues to monitor the situation while limited flights operate to bring Indian nationals back safely.
The successful evacuation has strengthened Shinde’s image as a leader willing to take direct action during emergencies, especially when citizens of Maharashtra are caught in international crises.
