Sena MP Rahul Shewale demands health check-up for people residing near HPCL refinery

Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader and Lok Sabha MP Rahul Shewale had convened a meeting with the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, (HPCL) following an incident of leakage of Catalyst powder was reported in the vicinity of the HPCL plant at Sewri. The residents of that area were in fear of having come in contact and have been infected or inhaled of some toxic substance and therefore it is expected to have adverse effects on their health.

On knowing about the health concern faced by the residents, Shiv Sena MP Shewale had called a meeting on Wednesday with the officials from the HPCL.

Shewale took follow up of the investigation and also suggested HPCL officials to organise a health check-up for the residents of that locality and with the help of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), to initiate a door-to-door health check-up of residents in the refinery area to check the health of all the citizens and whether the powder spill has any effect on the health of the citizens.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of MP Shewale and local corporator Nidhi Pramod Shinde, Executive Director HPCL, Vijay Agashe, CGM Rajesh Mehtani, GM Dinesh Prasad, Suraj Bansod, Assistant Commissioner, BMC Mahendra Ubale, Senior Inspector of RCF Police Station and other officials were present for the meeting.

Background

Catalyst powder was leaked from HPCL refinery on December 19. People residing in that area were in the grip of fear as the powder would have some toxic substance and therefore it is expected to have adverse effects on their health.
