Saint Petersburg and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly ink MoU to strengthen ties in start-ups, import substitution, and public health

Petersburg: At the invitation of the Committee on External Relations of the Administration of Saint Petersburg and within the framework of the initiative of the Russian House in Mumbai to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the twin ties between Saint Petersburg and Mumbai, the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Rahul Narwekar visited the Russia’s northern capital between September 15 to 18.

During the visit, a meeting was organized with a member of the Government of Saint-Petersburg, Chairman of the Committee on External Relations, Yevgeny Grigoriev, and Chairman of the Committee on Labour and Employment, Dmitry Cherneyko. The parties noted that despite the increased trade turnover between the two countries recently, the spheres of pharmaceuticals, machinery, shipbuilding, ICT, port logistics, as well as fishing remain promising areas.

Currently, the organization of the business mission of Saint Petersburg in Mumbai, scheduled for next year, is being worked out. Following recently successful road shows and presentations organized in Mumbai by the Committee for the Development of Tourism of Saint Petersburg, the parties discussed the opening of direct flights between cities.

During the meeting of Narwekar with the First Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg, Nikolai Bondarenko, a decision was made to establish permanent working contacts with the prospect of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the legislative bodies of Saint Petersburg and Maharashtra. Saint Petersburg legislators gratefully accepted an invitation to visit Mumbai to exchange experience in regulating the economic and social spheres, including support for start-ups, import substitution, and public health.

Rahul Narwekar also visited the only institution of secondary education in Russia with the study of Hindi – school No. 653 named after Rabindranath Tagore. He met with students and teachers and got acquainted with the school museum, which contains materials on the 50-year history of this unique educational institution.
