New Delhi: Russian leadership has seconded Kazakhstan’s proposal to hold a summit on nuclear disarmament with the participation of Russia, the United States, China, and the European Union. Moscow’s announcement supporting the call for the summit came in response to the statement made by Kazakhstan’s former President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

According to the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Moscow considers it important to hold multilateral talks in this area with the participation of all nuclear powers.

‘We believe that the time has come for all members of the international community to take concrete steps to build confidence, reduce tensions, strategic uncertainty, and the overall potential of conflict, which will ultimately have a direct and positive impact on the prospects for nuclear disarmament,’ a statement from the department said.

It further read that ‘In this context, it will be important to start a multilateral discussion on possible measures to ensure predictability and restraint in the field of nuclear missiles with the participation of all states with military nuclear capabilities.’ The agency noted that such work should be carried out ‘on the basis of agreement and without coercion, taking into account the legitimate interests and concerns of all parties involved.’

Last month, Nazarbayev proposed holding an international summit on nuclear disarmament in Kazakhstan with the participation of Russia, the United States, China, and the European Union.

A few months ago, China had expressed its support for Nazarbayev’s initiative. Spokesperson Zhao Lijian for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, in his weekly press briefing, had said that ‘Beijing supports the efforts of the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to reduce nuclear weapons in the world.’
