Rubio Signals US Backing On India’s Terror Concerns
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday publicly acknowledged India’s long-standing concerns over terror groups operating from Pakistani territory, asserting that New Delhi’s tensions with Islamabad are rooted in security threats rather than diplomatic developments involving Iran.
Speaking before leaving for Agra during his India tour, Rubio stated that India’s primary concern with Pakistan continues to revolve around cross-border militancy and extremist networks allegedly targeting Indian interests.
“India is always pointing to the fact that there are armed terrorist groups operating from Pakistani territory that target India,” Rubio said while addressing reporters.
Pakistan’s Iran Mediation ‘Not The Issue’
Rubio also attempted to separate Pakistan’s recent diplomatic engagements linked to Iran from the larger India-Pakistan equation, indicating that Islamabad’s role in facilitating communication during the Iran crisis had not triggered objections from New Delhi.
The remarks come amid increasing geopolitical activity in West Asia, where Pakistan has emerged as a communication bridge in certain diplomatic efforts involving Tehran and Washington.
However, Rubio clarified that India’s objections toward Pakistan remain security-centric and unrelated to those mediation efforts.
US Balancing India Partnership And Pakistan Channels
The US Secretary of State sought to reassure Indian leadership that Washington’s interactions with Pakistan remain tactical and limited, while emphasising that America’s deeper strategic alignment continues to be with India.
The comments are being viewed as part of Washington’s broader effort to manage sensitive regional equations without disrupting its rapidly expanding ties with New Delhi across defence, trade, technology and Indo-Pacific security.
Rubio’s visit comes at a time when India-US relations are witnessing renewed diplomatic engagement after months of friction over tariffs, energy policy and regional strategy.
Pahalgam Attack Still Shapes Diplomatic Narrative
Rubio’s latest remarks also revive memories of the diplomatic tensions that followed the Pahalgam terror attack in May 2025, which sharply escalated India-Pakistan relations.
During that period, Rubio reportedly held direct conversations with leadership in both countries while reiterating US support for India’s counter-terror concerns and urging Pakistan to act against terror infrastructure allegedly operating from its soil.
The episode significantly shaped Washington’s current diplomatic messaging on South Asian security.
Quad, Trade And Indo-Pacific In Focus
Apart from bilateral meetings with Narendra Modi and S. Jaishankar, Rubio also attended the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi alongside officials from Japan and Australia.
The summit focused heavily on Indo-Pacific maritime security, supply chain resilience, regional stability and growing strategic competition in Asia.
Observers believe Rubio’s India visit is part of a wider American push to strengthen strategic coordination with New Delhi while carefully navigating its parallel security communications with Pakistan.
