The Election Commission (EC) revealed today that a staggering 96.88 crore Indians are set to cast their votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, making it the largest electorate in the world. This figure marks a significant increase from the 2019 elections, with a notable addition of over two crore young voters aged between 18 to 29 years.

With a six per cent surge in registered voters compared to the last general elections, the EC underscored the growing democratic participation across the country. The Commission attributed this substantial rise to its dedicated efforts in ensuring the purity and health of the electoral roll, coupled with enhanced transparency in the revision process.

Highlighting the improvement in gender representation, the EC noted an increase in the gender ratio from 940 in 2023 to 948 in 2024. This positive trend reflects ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting inclusivity and gender equality in the electoral process.

CEC Rajiv Kumar, during a press conference in Pune, elaborated on the meticulous tasks involved in the revision of electoral rolls. He emphasized the active involvement of political parties at every stage, underscoring the collaborative approach adopted to uphold the integrity and fairness of the electoral system.

As India gears up for one of the world’s largest democratic exercises, the unprecedented voter enrollment reaffirms the nation’s commitment to upholding the fundamental principles of democracy and ensuring every eligible citizen’s right to participate in shaping the country’s future.
