Bengaluru: What began as a night of jubilation for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans turned into a nightmare, as a massive stampede broke out outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday night, leaving at least two people feared dead and over 20 injured, according to early reports.
Thousands of RCB supporters had gathered outside the stadium to celebrate the team’s historic IPL championship victory, eagerly waiting to welcome their heroes and catch a glimpse of the coveted trophy. However, as the crowd swelled beyond control, chaos erupted at the stadium gates.
“Those injured have been admitted to two different hospitals in the city. We are yet to get a confirmed report of the casualties. Initial reports suggest two have been declared dead,”— Senior police official, quoted by Hindustan Times.
The death toll could rise, authorities warned, as many of the injured are reportedly in critical condition. The injured were swiftly rushed to Bowring Hospital in Shivajinagar and a nearby private hospital.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and suffocation as fans surged forward, pushing and shoving in an attempt to get closer to the entrance. The resulting stampede caused multiple injuries, with victims suffering from breathing difficulties, falls, and crush injuries.
