Early counting trends show AAP dominating Punjab civic polls
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party emerged as the frontrunner in the early counting trends of Punjab’s urban local body elections as vote counting progressed across multiple municipal corporations, councils and Nagar Panchayats in the state.
According to initial figures, AAP candidates established a significant lead over rival parties in several civic bodies, strengthening the party’s position ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Congress and SAD lag behind in initial trends
Early trends indicated that the Indian National Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal were trailing behind AAP in several urban seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party struggled to make a major impact in the initial phase of counting.
Independent candidates also performed strongly in multiple wards, emerging as key players in closely contested municipal battles.
Counting underway across 103 urban local bodies
Counting of votes began in the morning for elections held across 103 urban civic bodies in Punjab, including eight major municipal corporations. The elections covered municipal corporations, municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats spread across different districts of the state.
The civic polls witnessed participation from thousands of candidates representing major political parties as well as independents, making it one of the largest urban electoral exercises in Punjab in recent years.
Violence allegations marked polling day
The local body elections had earlier witnessed allegations of clashes, violence, stone-pelting and booth-capturing in some areas during polling. Despite the tensions reported from select districts, authorities stated that polling was completed with substantial voter turnout across urban centres.
Political observers consider these elections politically significant as they are expected to shape momentum for the next Assembly elections in Punjab.
